Effect of Medium on the Bactericidal Activity of Sera

Abstract
D-mannose solution (1%)has been reported as being moderately bactericidal to Gram-negative organisms. A comparative experiment was undertaken to see whether this solution has any effect on the serum bactericidal activity when used as serum diluent and cell-suspending solution
1. Immune serum against Shigella flexneri la showed a considerably reduced bactericidal action as compared with normal one regardless of the kind of medium used in the bacterial suspension and serum dilution, but in the neighbourhood of 1 : 100 dilution normal serum showed more survived cells than immune serum.
2. At comparatively low dilutions, serum factors concerned with bactericidal activity exhibited their functions better in saline than in mannose solution, but at highly diluted serum the bactericidal activity seemed solely controlled by the medium, i.e., in mannose-containing test tubes the survival rate of cells was far less than in saline-containing ones.
